Australian Passport Photo (35–40 × 45–50 mm)
The Australian Passport Office allows a small size range — 35 to 40 mm wide and 45 to 50 mm high — with the face 32–36 mm from chin to crown. It is also unusually specific about how photos are printed.

1. Choose a photo — front-facing, even light, plain light background.
2. Adjust — drag to move, slider to zoom.
3. Optional: replace background
⚠️ Many authorities reject photos that are digitally altered. For the safest result, take the photo against a plain light wall and skip this step.
Background editing is disabled for this photo type because the issuing authority prohibits edited or background-replaced photos. Use a real plain wall.

Size
- Width 35–40 mm, height 45–50 mm (our preset uses 35×45 mm).
- Face from chin to crown 32–36 mm.
Quality and background
- Less than 6 months old, good-quality colour prints produced using dye sublimation — not from an inkjet printer.
- Printed on heavy-weight glossy paper, minimum 200 gsm.
- Plain white or light grey background that contrasts with your face.
- Uniform lighting showing natural skin tone; no shadows, reflections or red-eye; no retouching such as removing moles or wrinkles.
- Over 3 years old: face the camera straight on, eyes open, neutral expression. Under 3: mouth may be open; nobody else visible.
Our honest advice
The Australian Passport Office recommends using a professional passport photo provider and says it does not recommend online passport photo services or mobile apps, citing identity-fraud risk. Our tool never uploads your photo, but you should still follow the APO advice for the actual application. Use this page to check head size and framing, then print the sheet at a lab that uses dye-sublimation on glossy 200 gsm paper (most pharmacy and Kmart/Officeworks kiosks do), or have photos taken professionally.
Glasses, jewellery and head coverings
No glasses unless you cannot remove them for medical reasons — vision impairment alone isn't enough. Jewellery and piercings must not obscure the face or reflect light. Religious head coverings must be plain, without patterns, showing the face from chin to top of forehead and both edges. Hearing aids are fine; AirPods and earbuds are not.
Printing the sheet
A 4×6 inch (10×15 cm) print fits eight 35×45 mm photos. Choose glossy and "no crop / fit" and check one photo with a ruler.
How to make a Australia passport photo with this tool
- Pick a photo taken in the last few months against a plain white or light grey background, face lit evenly from the front.
- The tool finds your face and scales it so the head is about 34 mm tall on a 35 × 45 mm (1.38 × 1.77 in) photo.
- Drag or zoom until every check is green.
- Download the 413×531 px JPG for online forms, or a 4×6 sheet with 8 photos to print.
