Where 35×45 is used

The ICAO biometric photo guidance (Doc 9303) is built around a 35×45 mm print with the face filling 70–80% of the height. Countries and documents that use this size include Schengen visas, the UK (head 29–34 mm), Australia (35–40 × 45–50 mm), Japan and Korea passports (head 32–36 mm), Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Ireland, Pakistan, Nigeria, Russia and many more. The exact head size and background colour vary, so pick a country preset where we have one.

Printing a 35×45 photo correctly

At 300 DPI a 4×6 inch print (1800×1200 px) fits a 4×2 grid — eight photos — with 2 mm cutting gaps. An A4 sheet fits 36. When ordering, choose "fit" or "no crop" so the lab doesn't enlarge the image, then measure: each photo must be exactly 35 mm wide. If it's slightly off, the printer scaled it — reprint with scaling at 100%.

35×45 vs 2×2

2×2 inches is 51×51 mm — square and larger. They are not interchangeable: a 2×2 photo can't be trimmed into a 35×45 one without making the head the wrong size. Use the 2×2 preset for the US, Indian applications abroad and other documents that use that size.

How to make a Generic 35x45 mm biometric photo with this tool

  1. Pick a photo taken in the last few months against a plain, light background, face lit evenly from the front.

  3. Drag or zoom until every check is green.
  4. Download the 413×531 px JPG for online forms, or a 4×6 sheet with 8 photos to print.
