The three size families
2×2 inch (51×51 mm) — the US (passport, visa, DV lottery, USCIS), Indian passports abroad and OCI. 35×45 mm — the ICAO biometric size used by the UK, Schengen countries, Germany, Australia, Japan, Korea and most of the world. Country-specific sizes — Canada's 50×70 mm, China's 33×48 mm and Japan's 45×45 mm visa photo. Photos from one family can't be trimmed into another without breaking the head-size rule, so always make the photo for the exact document.
Head size is what gets photos rejected
Every specification sets a chin-to-crown range. It sounds technical, but in practice it means "how big your face is in the frame". The US allows 25–35 mm on a 51 mm photo (50–69%); 35×45 countries usually want 32–36 mm (70–80%); the UK is a little smaller at 29–34 mm; China wants 28–33 mm on 48 mm. Our tool measures this automatically and shows the band.
Digital uploads: pixels and kilobytes
Online forms add a technical layer: exact pixel dimensions and a file-size cap. The DS-160 and DV lottery cap at 240 KB, the OCI portal at 200 KB, China at 120 KB (and at least 40 KB). Our downloads search for the highest JPEG quality that fits the cap.
Where we could not build a DIY preset
- Philippines passport — the DFA captures your photo digitally at the appointment, so no photo is needed.
- Mexico passport — the SRE takes the photo at the passport office or consulate during your appointment.
- Germany passport/ID (domestic) — digital-only from certified providers since May 2025; our 35×45 preset is for other uses.
- Canada and Australia — the authorities require or strongly recommend professional photos; use our presets to check framing.
Printing any size
All presets tile onto a 4×6 inch or A4 sheet at 300 DPI with cut lines — see the print sheet tool. Order prints with "no crop" and measure one photo before cutting.
