Japan Visa Photo (45 × 45 mm)
The Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs visa application form has a 45 mm × 45 mm photo box. Several embassies, however, publish their own size, so check your local mission before you print.

1. Choose a photo — front-facing, even light, plain light background.
2. Adjust — drag to move, slider to zoom.
3. Optional: replace background
⚠️ Many authorities reject photos that are digitally altered. For the safest result, take the photo against a plain light wall and skip this step.
Background editing is disabled for this photo type because the issuing authority prohibits edited or background-replaced photos. Use a real plain wall.

What the official form says
The current MOFA "Visa Application Form to Enter Japan" asks for a photo of 45 mm × 45 mm (2 in × 2 in) pasted in the designated space. Japanese missions generally require that the photo:
- was taken within the last 6 months;
- shows the applicant alone, facing the front, without a hat;
- has a plain, light background with no pattern or shadow;
- is clear enough to identify you.
Local variations
MOFA does not publish a single chin-to-crown range for visa photos, and some embassies or visa centres specify 45 mm × 35 mm instead of a square photo, or ask for a white background specifically. Our 45×45 preset uses a head-size guide (25–34 mm, comparable to the 2×2 inch standard) rather than an official range — treat the head-size check as advice. If your mission asks for 45×35 mm, switch the selector to the Japan passport (35×45) or generic 35×45 preset.
eVISA
Nationals of many countries applying through Japan's eVISA system upload a digital face photo instead; the online form shows its own size and file limits when you upload. Follow those on-screen limits.
Taking the photo
Use a plain light wall, daylight from the front, and the camera at eye level about 1.5 m away. Remove sunglasses and hats. Keep a neutral expression and both ears and eyebrows ideally visible.
Printing
Since 45×45 mm is almost exactly the US 2×2 inch size (50.8 mm), make sure you pick the Japan visa preset, not 2×2 — the two are not interchangeable on a strict form. A 4×6 sheet fits six 45×45 photos.
How to make a Japan visa photo with this tool
- Pick a photo taken in the last few months against a plain white or light, no pattern background, face lit evenly from the front.
- The tool finds your face and scales it so the head is about 30 mm tall on a 45 × 45 mm (1.77 × 1.77 in) photo.
- Drag or zoom until every check is green.
- Download the 531×531 px JPG for online forms, or a 4×6 sheet with 6 photos to print.
